KOOTU CURRY

Kerala Style Kootu Curry made with Yam, raw banana and Black Chickpeas.

Kootu Curry is a traditional side dish served mostly for festivals & celebrations in Kerala, like Onam, Vishu, and marriages. 

The word kootu means ‘a mix or combination’, and the recipe is a mix of different vegetables.

The vegetables used for this dish differ from place to place in Kerala. It’s most common ingredients are Chena (yam), Kaya (raw banana) and Black chickpeas.

KOOTU CURRY

INGREDIENTS

Black Chickpeas - 1 cup

Raw banana - 1/2 cup

yam - 1/2 cup

Turmeric powder - 1tsp

Red chilli powder - 1tsp

Pepper powder - 1tbsp

Grated coconut - 1/2cup

Cumin seeds - 1tsp

Salt - as needed

Soak black chickpeas overnight. Pressure cook it with water and a pinch of salt for 3 whistles. Then add raw banana and  yam,chilli powder, turmeric powder, pepper powder and salt for taste, water as requred . Cook until the three whistle comes.

Grind ½ cup grated coconut with cumin seeds to a coarse paste, add grinded coconut paste into above items, mix well and continue cooking till the raw coconut smell subsides.

FOR TEMPERING

Grated coconut- 4 tbsp

Coconut oil - as needed

Curry leaves - as needed 

Mustard seeds - 1 tbsp

Heat oil in a separate pan and splutter mustard seeds. Add curry leaves,
and grated coconut. Roast the coconut until they turn golden brown. Mix well with above items.

Kootu Curry is ready, serve with rice and chapati !.

KOOTU CURRY
KOOTU CURRY is best served with rice. You can accompany a thoran by the side along with some papaddums and pickle.
